Journal Entry #2 – Iteration Marks

For my second entry, I’ve decided to go more in depth on Iteration Marks. Something I actually didn’t know much about, they’re quite interesting and can be very useful.

Iteration marks are used when a character or word is being duplicated.

々 – Is known as a ノマ　(Because it resembles katakana ノandマ). A ノマ is used for Kanji repetition marks.

Examples: (Similar Meaning)

人(Person) 人人　can be written as 人々(People)
山(Mountain)　山山 can be written as 山々(Many Mountains)
我(Our) われわれ can be written as 我々(Us)

Examples: (Altered Meaning)

個(Piece)　個個 can be written as 個々(Piece by Piece)
時(Time) 時時　can be written as　時々 (Sometimes)
翌日(Next Day)　翌翌日 can be written as 翌々日(“Next Next Day” – Two Days Later)

ゝ – Is known as a ひらがながえし it is used for Hiragana repetition marks.

ヽ – Is known as a かたかながえしit is used for Katakana repetition marks.

However for these, it’s just like normal Hiragana in the case of say: じじ　would be じゞ and not じゝ. Make sure to be careful of this. In general only Kanji iteration marks are used in today’s society.

Ok, this was somewhat rushed AND Im extremely rusty with my Japanese. Did not get to study much at all over the summer (I reall should have), so anybody that can help fix this up some is welcome to do so.
